Human Security

The International Institute for Human Security (IIHS) is being launched today to make relevant knowledge and methodologies available to locally based peacebuilders in six regions focusing on six key areas of peacebuilding. The IIHS, based in the United States, has begun the process to register as a non-profit organization; its single objective is to advance knowledge sharing and knowledge transfer related to human security between specialists and those in need of knowledge and know-how using technology as the platform.

A connection opportunity for those are often left out of dialogue

Knowledge-sharing and knowledge-transfer are both the creed and mission of the IIHS. Grassroots activists, decision-makers, public servants, etc. often miss vital know-how and support to face tremendous challenges stemming from lack of knowledge: what are the steps to take toward equality for all societal groups? Is my organization doing enough to promote human rights in my community? Is my community doing enough to tackle the climate crisis or promote good governance? What are the warning signs of food insecurity, etc. This is why the IIHS was initiated: to share methods, knowledge and tools to empower the locally-based peacebuilder and to empower the skilled to share their knowledge effortlessly.

As locally based peacebuilders lack access to the latest know-how and methodologies, overextended specialists lack the available time to travel and share their expertise in person. The IIHS will connect both parties using online tools for virtual workshops and mini lectures. Recorded materials will be facilitated and provided, furthering the support. Both the specialist and the peacebuilder will benefit from the fostering of human connection that is often only experienced in person.

Technology can be a useful tool in the advancement of human security worldwide,” said Shon Abegaz, founder and Executive Director of IIHS, “this is why we designed an approach by which locally based individuals in need of knowledge and methodology know-how can connect with the skilled who are ready to engage and support.”

A focus on six areas of peacebuilding known as Societal Stabilizers

IIHS focuses on key societal stabilizers related to dignity and equality and include:

  • Good Governance and Organizational Transparency
  • Women, Migrants and Victims of Modern Slavery
  • Food and Environmental Sustainibility
  • The Responsibility to Protect
  • Climate Protection
  • Indigenous Liberties

When key societal stabilizers are strengthened locally, the ability to live with dignity, free from want and fear, is dramatically increased,” insists Abegaz, “this is why we put a focus of these six areas.”

A Founding Board and focus on six key regions

Founding Board Members will bring experience and expertise to support a strategic focus on six geographic regions: Eastern Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, North America and South Asia.
